Wood Chopping - Something I have always enjoyed watching!!
Yep, I am a bit of a sports fan have always been and will more than likely always be! I like the high profile sports, AFL (Aussie Rules Football) - Go POWER!!! - Basketball (Which I played for many years even only being 5ft nothing in height), Tennis (I played this too!!! Whoo Hoo), Cricket and some other well advertised and popular sports. But I am also largely interested in the smaller, and in some cases, lessor known sports, which in their own right can entertain a crowd.
One of these lessor know sports, well not really lessor know in Australia, as we have had many world champions of this sport, is Wood Chopping. I first saw this sport when I traveled from the Barossa Valley to one of my first Royal Adelaide Agricultural Shows. Agricultural shows are held in all capital cities in Australia, and I like to explain them as where the country comes to the city... as well a lot of stomach churning rides and other variety of entertainment, and exhibitions. Since seeing or experiencing my first viewing of wood chopping competitions I have always had a particular interest in getting to see an event when I can. It is a sport for all ages, in the clip above the expert chopper closest to camera is in his 70's (A Malanda town favourite) and the chopper who starts last on 44 seconds (Blue shirt) is 23, so definitely can be for all ages. Although you will mainly see men in competition there are ladies events. (Lucky!!! not that I could compete, but good to know if I wanted to.)
The above video is from my recent visit to Malanda, small town in the Tropical North Queensland Tablelands. This town recently, the week previous, had had its own Agricultural show, which had wood chopping, but these choppers, some local and some from various other states, had stayed on for a final display for the Malanda Pub birthday celebrations.
Enjoy the clip, my very 1st upload to the net, and if you get a chance take a look at this old, but still popular and at time spectacular sport live! (Check the program guide for your cities Ag Show.)
Cheers and remember - Live Life now!!!
